Cape May to Haverstraw (On the Hudson)

We left Cape May at 7:30 this morning.  We were moving just a bit slower than the last two days.  We are both tiring and are pushing hard to make our way north.  You wouldn't think that sitting on a boat for ten or eleven hours would be tiring; but it sure is.  For Dan the long days mean a LOT of driving.  He has to keep the boat on course, watch for obstacles and stay completely aware. For Marie the long days mean, having everything ready to go, planning meals, plotting a course and helping the driver stay on that course.

We both have to keep the electronics charged, the boat ready, (fenders, lines, stuff stowed and everything organized), and keep ourselves together too.

Today was simple navigation compared to some of the days we've had.  Go north!  For the most part the driving wasn't too bad except for New York Harbor.  Crazy busy and really turbulent waters.

Several times during the day we saw schools of small fish. They formed teardrop like pods in the water and made almost artistic waves of splashes on the surface.

We passed Atlantic City, NJ.  My pictures aren't great; it was a very overcast day for the first part of the trip.

At the northern tip of New Jersey we had the best surprise!  Dan saw something in the water that looked like spray erupting.  Yup!  He saw a whale!!  We realized as we watched the spray that it was probably a couple small whales.  They moved past the boat and we saw a tail fluke wave! What an awesome experience.  It happened so fast that no pictures were possible.

Coming into NY Harbor we played tag with one of these big guys.  They are amazingly huge up close.

We were on the water for nine hours today.  It was close to 175 miles.  We landed in Haverstraw on the Hudson about four thirty.
