Ilion, Not Lyin

Thursday, July 16

We were at the first lock gate right on the button at eight o'clock.  The Locks only run from eight until six each day. The latest leg of our journey took us from Amsterdam to Ilion, New York.   (That's Ee-lee-on) We covered 52 miles today.  That doesn't sound like much; but most of it was at six miles an hour.

Before we left Amsterdam; Sandi took this picture.  This is a theater ship that travels from place to place.  It is about one hundred feet long.  They roam from place to place like gypsies.  They put on shows for donations and get sponsorships from different communities.

Our first encounter of the day was the this gentleman coming out of the lock.  We'd called the lock master to request Westbound passage.  He replied that the lock would be emptying and one Eastbound vessel would be passing us.  This kayak was the Eastbound vessel.

The gentleman, well into his sixties called to us that he was paddling from Niagara Falls to the statue of Liberty.

The highlight of our day today was this monster lock.

This was the largest lift of the canal. We rose 40.5 feet!

Two lovely line tenders.

One handsome line tender.

Here's our captain.

Beautiful granite outcroppings were everywhere.

New meaning to the term house on the water.

Here's our Time for Us III.  That's Dan and Jerry blowing up the Big Balls.  We needed large fenders for the locks and they had lost some air.
